From New York to Scotland: an immersive destination wedding experience at Penicuik Estate.

“—Penicuik Estate is the perfect backdrop to host a Scotland destination wedding with room to breathe, discover, and celebrate at a beautiful pace.”
When Ben and Connor brought their guests across the Atlantic from New York to Scotland, they did so with the intention of truly immersing themselves in the Scottish experience—and Penicuik Estate was the perfect backdrop to host a long-weekend destination wedding with room to breathe, discover, and celebrate at a beautiful pace.
Spread across 3,100 hectares of sweeping Midlothian parkland, Penicuik Estate carries a rare spatial freedom. It isn’t a venue where a wedding is confined to a single room or a rigid schedule; it’s an estate that offers countless spaces and versatility for celebrating in a truly storied way. From the quiet grandeur of the 18th-century Palladian ruins to the reflective calm of the High Pond, the striking glasshouse Orangery or the sympathetically restored and stylishly reimagined interiors of the main house itself, every pocket of the estate offers its own atmosphere.
Having been a destination wedding photographer across Scotland and Europe for more than fifteen years, here is my practical take on the spatial flow, guest capacities, and logistical realities of hosting a multi-day wedding at Penicuik Estate and a glimpse into why its spaces are just so very special.

Exploring the Grounds: Event Spaces & Flow at Penicuik Estate
“—the couple used nearly every corner of Penicuik’s grounds across their three-day stay.”
Rather than keeping everything in one location, Ben and Connor used nearly every corner of Penicuik’s grounds across their three-day stay. Planner Coleen McKay worked with the couple in detail to ensure each part of the weekend moved guests naturally between the water, the historic house, the gardens, and the stone ruins.
High Pond Welcome Festivities & Penicuik House Courtyard Cocktail Party
The weekend opened casually around the estate’s open parkland, with relaxed welcome lunch by the High Pond and traditional Highland games across the forestry lawns. As evening arrived, the couple utilised the Eskfield Walled Garden for their rehearsal dinner with toasts, followed by an intimate, open-air welcome party in the central courtyard of Penicuik House, with live jazz and cocktails as day turned into night.

High Pond Wedding Ceremony
Set along the water’s edge with the Pentland Hills rising in the distance, the ceremony utilized the natural contours of the High Pond shore. A curved, serpentine aisle lined with growing botanical meadows by Wild Flowers Edinburgh framed the water, offering an open-air backdrop for a personal blessing by the loch.
During the brief pause as guests transitioned from the loch to the reception area, I took Ben and Connor for a five-minute stroll through the grounds. I prefer capturing portraits during these natural, unforced breaks rather than pulling couples away from their guests—especially when family and friends have travelled internationally across the Atlantic to be with them.

The Rose Garden Sailcloth Marquee & Glasshouse Lounge
To accommodate larger guest numbers for the main wedding dinner, a custom sailcloth marquee was positioned on the Rose Garden lawns, featuring overflowing table meadows and botanical design details. As twilight set in, the glowing Glasshouse Orangery served as a dedicated evening lounge for handcrafted espresso martinis before late-night dancing resumed.

The Historic Ruin Finale
For the final chapter of the evening, guests were guided down to the 18th-century Palladian ruins of Old Penicuik House. A custom high-tech laser show projected against the historic stone facade opened the night, leading directly into an afterparty set inside the interior of the ancient ruins themselves.
“—Moving effortlessly between the tranquility of the High Pond, the understated elegance of the Rose Garden sailcloth marquee, and an afterparty set within 300-year-old stone ruins gives a multi-day celebration an extraordinary sense of momentum.”
