Barnbougle Castle offers something increasingly rare among castle wedding venues in Scotland — the scale and drama of a historic fortress combined with the privacy of a coastal estate.

Originally built in the 13th century and later restored during the 19th century, the castle forms part of the Rosebery Estate, long associated with the Earls of Rosebery. Today it provides couples with a wedding setting defined by heritage, atmosphere and spectacular views across the Forth.

Inside, richly detailed interiors create a striking contrast to the surrounding seascape. The castle’s Great Hall, elegant staircases and intimate library spaces provide beautiful settings for ceremonies, receptions and quieter moments throughout the day.

Barnbougle Castle offers a variety of spaces for wedding celebrations, allowing the day to unfold naturally across the castle and surrounding grounds.

The Great Hall
With its dramatic proportions and historic character, the Great Hall is often used for ceremonies and dining, accommodating up to 140 guests.

The Library
A smaller, more intimate space within the castle, perfect for private moments such as signing the register or quiet drinks with close family.

The Grounds and Coastal Terrace
Outside, the castle’s terrace and lawns overlook the Firth of Forth, creating an extraordinary setting for drinks receptions and outdoor ceremonies. The estate grounds also allow space for marquee or sailcloth structures for larger celebrations.

Barnbougle Castle itself does not offer overnight accommodation, though guests are well served by the nearby city of Edinburgh and surrounding East Lothian coastline.

Within the castle, an original historic bedchamber provides a beautiful private space for couples to prepare for the day or change during the celebrations, adding another thoughtful detail to the wedding experience.

For photography, Barnbougle Castle offers an extraordinary range of backdrops. From the dramatic coastal setting to the textured interiors of the castle itself, every corner of the estate carries a sense of atmosphere and history.

Couples can wander the shoreline for portraits overlooking the Firth of Forth, explore the castle’s sweeping staircase, or step into the candlelit warmth of the Library. The contrast between the rugged coastline and the refined interiors creates imagery that feels both timeless and deeply romantic.

For couples seeking a castle wedding venue in Scotland that combines heritage architecture with dramatic coastal scenery, Barnbougle Castle offers something truly distinctive.

Its location just outside Edinburgh makes it easily accessible for international guests, while the estate’s secluded position ensures a sense of privacy and occasion throughout the celebrations.

The result is a wedding setting that feels both grand and intimate — where historic architecture, sea views and candlelit interiors come together to create a truly memorable experience.

Having photographed weddings across Scotland and Europe for more than fifteen years, Barnbougle Castle remains one of the most distinctive and atmospheric castle wedding venues in the country — and it is always a privilege to document celebrations within its historic walls and coastal grounds.

If you are planning a wedding at Barnbougle Castle and would like to explore photography for your celebration, I would be delighted to hear more about your plans.
